The Crazy Horse Memorial was the dream of Chief Henry Standing Bear, a Lakota Chief, who wanted the sculpture to serve to create cross-cultural understanding and to mend relations between Natives and non-natives. He invited sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski to carve the memorial. Ziolkowski originally came to the Black Hills to help Gutzon Borglum on Mount Rushmore. It is the world’s largest mountain carving in progress – entirely privately funded. When in South Dakota you will not want to miss this spiritual location.
