This week we head back to the Sunshine State which boasts 177 state parks and 195 craft breweries to explore! We’re going to zero in on the hamlet of Dunedin and explore with Jan O’Brien who recently visited and did some wandering.
Dunedin (pronounced DONE-EE-DIN) is a city in Pinellas County, Florida on the Gulf coast about 24 miles north of St. Petersburg. Two Scotsman who applied for the first post office in North Pinellas County in 1899 named the town, which is derived from Dùn Èideann, the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh.
Scottish families originally settled Dunedin and by 1913 the population was 350. Today Dunedin has 36,545 residents (2017).

Here is my list of even more reasons to visit (or perhaps move to) Dunedin, FL:
- Honeymoon Island State Park – https://www.floridastateparks.org/honeymoonisland. Four miles of White sandy beaches, shelling, amazing bird watching (eagles, osprey, great-horned owls), a three-mile trail through a pine forest.
- Dunedin Causeway – https://www.dunedingov.com/live-work-play/play-around-town/dunedin-causeway 5-mile route that leads from Bayshore Boulevard (Alternate 19) directly to the entrance of Honeymoon Island. It is a terrific destination for fishing, watercraft activities, and sunbathing. The area is also a popular venue for walking, jogging, and bike riding as a spur of the Pinellas Trail runs along the entire length of the Causeway on the south-side of the road.
- Caladesi Island State Park https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/caladesi-island-state-park Accessible only by boat.
- Pinellas Trail – bisects downtown Dunedin. This is a 39-mile cycling and pedestrian trail created along a portion of abandoned railroad corridor that extends from St. Pete to Tarpon Springs.
- Craft Breweries – https://www.cafealfresco.com/blog/7-unique-tampa-bay-beer-breweries-in-dunedin-fl-near-cafe-alfresco/
