Matt Emerson WBNL NYC Brooklyn BridgeThe Brooklyn Bridge spans the East River between Manhattan & Brooklyn and is one of the most photographed spans in the world – save, perhaps, the Golden Gate across the continent. Both are a testament to the will power to do the impossible. To conquer things that have never been done before, at a great price – both financially and physically.

Completed in 1883, it has a main span of 1,595 feet and was the first steel-wire suspension bridge constructed. The Roeblings, father and son, oversaw the bridge construction but both fell victim to illness during construction. It is a fascinating story of men who were passionate about a project and dedicated to its completion at any cost.

Side note for you that are traveling on the West Coast , if you are on the corner of South Alameda and East 4th Place in Downtown Los Angeles, not only can you get a great beer flight at the Angel City Brewery but you can do so in the old John A. Roebling’s Sons Company. A nice buzz in history.

Oh, and did I mention that they were also involved with the Slinky? Who knew that there was so much more to ponder while wandering across the Brooklyn Bridge than a trip across the East River?
