The Carriage Roads of Acadia National Park have a Rich History

The Carriage Roads in Acadia National Park were the brainchild of industrialist & philanthropist (and landscape design enthusiast) John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Built in the early part of the last century, the roads and bridges are for the public use and the 45+ miles host some of the most scenic spots on Mount Desert Island. Perfect for hikers, bicyclist,  horse riders, and horse-drawn carriages on the island. This diverse network of woodland roads were, in part, inspired by Fredrick Law Olmstead‘s Central Park in NYCwhere carriages and automobiles were preferably separated.
