Kings Canyon National Park, located on CA SR-180 is a truly spectacular Park. The dramatic u-shaped canyon was glacially formed and today, with the help of the powerful Kings River, is one of the nation’s deepest, and most beautiful, canyons.
Make a stop at the Visitors Center at Grant Grove to get your bearings and learn a bit about what lies ahead. From there you’ll wind down the 28 mile Kings Canyon Scenic Byway into Cedar Grove at Roads End.
Cedar Grove is home to some of the most tranquil camping sites ever and it can be your home base as you explore the wonders of the area.
At Roads End you’ll find several hiking options. No doubt the most popular is the hike to Mist Falls (3.9 miles) and Paradise Valley (5.7 miles) on the Woods Creek Trail.
You’ll experience a wide variety of terrain on this trek, from sandy riverbeds, through bog-like swampy areas, stunning granite passageways, crashing falls and ultimately a peaceful valley. The views are spiritual and make you feel alive!
Paradise Valley is a good turn-around spot for day hikers but just ahead is the Rae Lakes Loop. This 41.4 mile loop is one of the most popular hikes in the Sierras and we have it on good authority that is lives up to the hype. The Rae Lakes Loop is definitely on this Travologist‘s list of to-dos.
Back at camp, or where ever your head rests after this hike, you’ll be enjoying the memories of a fantastic journey. What a great place to wander.
