15 Fun Oscar Facts

1. The winners of the very first Academy Awards, which took place on May 16, 1929, and honored films released from 1927 to 1928, were announced three months before the ceremony.  The first Academy Awards are held in the Blossom Room at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. The first Best Picture award goes to “Wings.”
2. The first color film to win the Best Picture gong was ‘Gone With The Wind’ in 1940.
3. The Academy Awards were shown on TV for the first time on March 19, 1953, on NBC. and the first broadcast in color in 1966
4. Only three films have even won all five of the most coveted Oscars for Best Film, Actor, Actress, Director, and Writing. They are: ‘It Happened One Night’ (1935), ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’ (1976) and ‘The Silence Of The Lambs’ (1992).
5. Cate Blanchett was the first person to win an Oscar for playing an Oscar winner; she portrayed Katharine Hepburn in 2004’s The Aviator.
6. Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the Oscar for Best Director in 2010 for her Iraq war thriller, ‘The Hurt Locker’ in. Kathryn beat her ex-husband James Cameron who was up for the same award for his 3D epic ‘Avatar’. She is only the fourth woman to ever receive a nomination, the others are Sofia Coppola for ‘Lost In Translation’ (2004), Jane Campion for ‘The Piano’ (1994) and Lina Wertmüller for ‘Pasqualino Settebellezze’ (1977).
7. ‘The Hurt Locker’ broke another film industry record when it bagged six Oscars out of a total of nine nominations – including the coveted Best Picture gong – as the lowest-grossing movie to ever win at the Oscars. It is estimated to have earned $21 million at the box office, that’s less than 2% of what it’s competitor ‘Avatar’ made in ticket sales in the same year.  No surprise here – ‘Avatar’ holds the crown for a most expensive movie ever to win an Oscar with a production budget estimated to be around $280 million. While it failed to win Best Picture or Best Director, it did pick up Academy Awards for Art Direction, Cinematography, and Visual Effects.
8. 2001 – The best Animated Film Category was added.  Beauty and the Beast was nominated for Best Film in 1991.  Up in (2009) and Toy Story 3 92010) were nominated for best film as well after the academy expanded the # of nominees from 5 to 10
9. In 2017, the romantic musical, “La La Land,” picks up 14 Oscar nominations, tying the record held by “All About Eve” and “Titanic.”
10. Walt Disney is the most honored person in Oscar history. He received 59 nominations and 26 competitive awards throughout his career.
11. Composer John Williams is the most nominated living person – 51 nominations (including 5 wins).
12. Meryl Streep is the most nominated performer in Academy history with 21 nominations.
13. Jack Nicholson is the most nominated male performer in Academy history with 12 nominations.
14. Katharine Hepburn had the most Oscar wins for a performer, with four.
15. Daniel Day-Lewis is the only person to have three Best Actor Oscars.
